| Three Phase |
Three phase transformers are used throughout industry to change values of three phase voltage and current. Since three phase power is the most common way in which power is produced, transmitted,three-phase transformers are used to step voltages up or down. A three-phase transformer is made of three sets of primary and secondary windings, each set wound around one leg of aniron core assembly. Essentially it looks like three single-phase transformers sharing a joined core. These transformer range is available from 500 VA TO 200 KVA . |
|
There are only 4 possible transformer combinations:
- Delta to Delta - use: industrial applications
- Delta to Wye/star - use : most common; commercial and industrial
- Wye/star to Delta - use : high voltage transmissions
- Wye /star to star / Wye - use : rare, don't use causes harmonics and balancing problems

DELTA connection
A delta system is a good short-distance distribution system. It is used for neighborhood and small commercial loads close to the supplying substation. Only one voltage is available between any two wires in a delta system. The delta system can be illustrated by a simple triangle. A wire from each point of the triangle would represent a three-phase, three-wire delta system. The voltage would be the same between any two wires |
|
WYE/Star Connetion
In a wye system the voltage between any two wires will always give the same amount of voltage on a three phase system. However, the voltage between any one of the phase conductors (X1, X2, X3) and the neutral (X0) will be less than the power conductors. For example, if the voltage between the power conductors of any two phases of a three wire system is 208v, then the voltage from any phase conductor to ground will be 120v. This is due to the square root of three phase power. In a wye system, the voltage between any two power conductors will always be 1.732 (which is the square root of 3) times the voltage between the neutral and any one of the power phase conductors. The phase-to-ground voltage can be found by dividing the phase-to-phase voltage by 1.732 |

| Isolation Transformer |
An isolation transformer, which often has symmetrical windings, is used to decouple two circuits. An isolation transformer allows an AC signal or power to be taken from one device and fed into another without electrically connecting the two circuits. Isolation transformers can be used to block transmission of DC signals from one circuit to the other, but allow AC signals to pass. They will also block interference caused by ground loops. Isolation transformers with electrostatic shields are used for power supplies for sensitive equipment such as computers or laboratory instruments. |
Standard Isolation Transformers
Isolation Transformers have primary and secondary windings that are kept physically separate. Sometimes isolation transformers are called "insulated transformers". This is because the primary and secondary windings are insulated from each other.
In an isolation transformer the output winding will be isolated, or floating from earth ground, unless bonded when it is installed.
|
Shielded Isolation Transformers
Shielded isolation transformers have all the features of the standard isolation transformers plus they also incorporate a full metallic shielding (this shielding is often copper or aluminum) between the primary and secondary windings. These shielded isolation transformers are then referred to as electrostaticly shielded isolation transformers. The electrostatic shield ("Faraday Shield") is connected to earth ground and performs two functions:
- It filters (attenuates) voltage spikes (voltage transients). These shielded isolation transformers have an attenuation ratio of 100 to 1.
- It filters common mode noise. This is usually an attenuation of approximately 30 decibels.
Shielded isolation transformers are preferred over standard isolation transformers because it provides protection for sensitive
and critical equipment.
When more than one shielded isolation transformer is installed between the source and the load, this is referred to as
"cascading" and vastly improves power quality. |

| Auto Transformer |
An auto transformer is a transformer having part of its winding included in both the input and output circuit. There is a common portion of the winding there is no isolation between the input and output circuits. Also note that there is only one winding. |
The winding has at least three taps where electrical connections are made. One end of the winding is usually connected in common to both the voltage source and the electrical load. The other end of the source and load are connected to taps along the winding. Different taps on the winding correspond to different voltages, measured from the common end. In a step-down transformer the source is usually connected across the entire winding while the load is connected by a tap across only a portion of the winding. In a step-up transformer, conversely, the load is attached across the full winding while the source is connected to a tap across a portion
of the winding. |
